Hello I believe that the house and origanal story are true crimes. 112 ocean avenue in long island was lived in by the defoe family after becoming resonalbly wealthy they had moved their family to the country form the city. However the eldest son ronald defoe junior was disturbed and once during an argument between his parents had pointed a loaded shotgun at his father that never went off. Then on the 14th of November when all his family were asleep he took a gun and shot them all while they were in bed his parents and two brothers and two sisters. covering up what he had done he pinned the blame on a member of the mafia. he was later found to be guity of the murders and sent to prision. Dr. Kaplan was a well-respected Long Island parapsychologist. The founder of the Parapsychology Institute of America and he investigated weather the house was haunted after the killings and determined that it wasn't. So although this this story is sadly very much true the films and book were pretty much hollywood fluff. Hope that helps Love Emma xxx

Hey,
I've taken a keen interest in the Amyitville. And have watched the 70's version of the film, and the most recent, also watched numerous documentaries and read books. But not yet have i came across the reason for the Lutz's to leave the house? They havn't spoken about it in anywhere i've seen! Its amazing if what was portrayed in the films actually happened, and would love to spend a day (and a night) in the house!

A repeated answer from past post:
Hiya. I live near the Amityville house and have been in it both before and after the murders. I still go quite often. Butch (Ron) DeFeo was an acquaintance of mine and a regular at the Dakota Rose, a bar that was owned by a mutual friend and Butch had a history with threatening people with guns. Is the Amityville Horror true, yes, Ron killed his family, what more of a horror is there? The truth that I know is that choosing drugs and violence leads a pure soul down a horrible path, one in which we may not even realize the extent. The truth is, in an uncontrolable rage a young man went in and killed his family. Is it a horror, most definitely. Is the house haunted? I don't think so. I have known a few owners of the house, the first owners after the Lutz's told me the house was not haunted, and they were told by the Lutz's they wrote the book for the money (heresay, I know). I never, ever saw the house with flies, or pigs running around. The Archdiocese of Rockville Center (who are in charge of this area) have no record of any "exorcisms" being done there. Is it an Indian Burial ground, probably but so is most of the town of Massapequa and I am sure many other towns on Long Island (we preserved ours). The house has been altered a bit in hopes of controlling the sightseers. Talk about a horror!!! Even that beautiful stained glass window was removed, only in hope it will be unrecognizable. Ocean Ave. is a happy block once again (unhappiness caused only by the crowds). Most important of all, my experience with spirit, is there are no evil spirits, they only come with love to touch us with love every now and then for a few brief moments. Some of us may not understand the "feel". Does one sense something when they go there. I suppose so as we are all psychic, so we probably could pick up on the horrors of that night. I still go there and feel a sense of extreme sadness, but the sadness is for an aquaitnance from my youth, and his family, and the choice that was made. Only a brief moment though, as I soon hear the laughter of children on the street and see the beautiful view accross the canal and gaze at the water with loving thoughts for them all. |

Yes, looking at pictures, i can tell its a beautiful place, just a shame such sadness had to come there!
I guess your right in the fact that, if we believe something bad will happen then, it will happen, so believing that the Amityville is haunted, might make us encounter things that we may think makes the house haunted.

The movie was false, it did take on a life of it's own as wierd ppl filled with silly thoughts started doing things like peeing on the yard and blaming it on the house.
Just remember this 99.9% of things in the movies have been exagerated to make it more interesting |

Datin what a lovely post you have written. I read a few years ago that the whole haunted fiasco was made-up and the horror, the true horror, was not that of a haunting but that of the slaughter of a whole family.
